Most commentators on the history of economic thought believe that modern economics began with Adam Smith. Each has different reasons for their claim. Many consider Smith's Wealth of Nations to be a fundamental work, because in their opinion, it was with the publication of this work that pure economics began and was clearly separated from religious and moral sciences. This interpretation became popular during the twentieth century, but since the last decades of this century, the aforementioned opinion has been opposed by a group of economists. This group considers Smith to be a member of the ethical tradition of political economy, whose history goes back to ancient Greece. In this regard, the purpose of writing the present article is to examine the role and position of ethics in Adam Smith's economic thoughts using a descriptive-analytical method. Therefore, relying on the library method and through available sources about Adam Smith's thoughts, including the study of three cases: a) Smith's life; b) Smith's influence on contemporary professors and friends; and c) Smith's books, including The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations, the ethical aspects of Smith's economic ideas are extracted and analyzed. The results show that, contrary to the popular view in the twentieth century, Adam Smith was not only not alien to ethics and its role in economics, but he himself was its defender and emphasized the need to pay attention to ethics in economics.
