The rising trend of social violence in societies, with its detrimental consequences particularly from the perspective of social cohesion, has made studying the factors influencing its occurrence a necessity. An examination of Iran's economic indicators over the past two decades reveals an upward trend in interpersonal conflicts, coinciding with a surge in the inflation rate from 9.6% in 2006 to 40.7% in 2023. Inflation not only reduces purchasing power but also, by inducing absolute frustration (independent of social comparison), heightens the motivation for aggression and leads to subjective violence. This study, by focusing on Žižek's categorization of violence (with emphasis on subjective violence) and integrating it with Dollard et al.'s (1939) frustration-aggression theory from a social psychology perspective, provides a theoretical foundation for the relationship between inflation and violence. It then examines the causal relationship between inflation and social violence during 2006–2023 using a Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model. To this end, after conducting stationarity tests and determining the optimal lag length, the Toda–Yamamoto modified Wald test was employed. The results indicate a positive and statistically significant causal relationship running from inflation to social violence. This finding aligns with the frustration-aggression theory but, unlike studies based on relative deprivation, emphasizes absolute frustration. While most prior research has focused on crime or the effects of comparative deprivation, the present study treats social violence as an independent phenomenon, separate from structural or relative inequality, thereby seeking to fill the existing gap in the literature. The findings suggest that controlling inflation is the most essential strategy for reducing violence. Furthermore, strengthening the social safety net during periods of high inflation and implementing automatic wage indexation to inflation can help mitigate aggression stemming from economic stress and contribute to violence reduction.
