Objective:
This study examines knowledge‑based firms (KBFs) which, despite their pivotal role in economic growth and innovation, remain highly vulnerable to financial shocks. This fragility stems from their unique characteristics, including intangible asset bases, high revenue uncertainty, and a profound dependence on external financing.
Method:
By integrating graph theory, to map the debt/investment network structure, with the knowledge‑based economy framework, and by incorporating the Knowledge‑based Firm Vulnerability Index (KVI), this paper proposes a novel analytical approach for assessing the financial sustainability of this ecosystem.
Findings:
Employing key network centrality measures (degree, betweenness, closeness, and eigenvalue centrality), we identify systemically important firms and the primary channels of risk propagation. Based on these insights, we propose mechanisms and targeted supportive policy interventions.
The empirical evidence reveals that more than 76% of firms operating in the soft and cultural industries exhibit both significant innovative capacity and considerable financial fragility.
Conclusion:
Given that the required level of support for these firms, spanning from prototype development to commercialization, can be effectively addressed through well‑designed government planning and targeted interventions, these enterprises are capable of generating substantial value‑added for the national economy.
