Export diversification is recognized as one of the key strategies for reducing the vulnerability of developing economies to external shocks and for enhancing the sustainability of economic growth. In this context, natural resource abundance may, on the one hand, provide financial resources for the development of production, and on the other hand, through intensifying dependence on extractive sectors, exert different effects on countries’ export structures. Therefore, examining the potentially nonlinear relationship between natural resource abundance and export diversification is of particular importance.
This study investigates the nonlinear effects of natural resource abundance on export diversification in a selected group of developing countries over the period 2005–2023, using the Panel Smooth Transition Regression (PSTR) model. For this purpose, natural resource abundance (NR) is employed as the transition variable. The estimation results indicate the existence of a strong nonlinear relationship among the variables under study and suggest a two-regime model with a threshold value of 6.3406 and a slope parameter of 0.716. According to the findings, natural resource abundance has a positive and significant relationship with export diversification in the first regime, while in the second regime it has a negative and significant relationship. Hence, the inverted U-shaped hypothesis between natural resource abundance and export diversification in the countries under study is confirmed. Real per capita income, trade openness, and information and communication technology have positive and significant effects on export diversification in both regimes. The effect of financial development becomes positive and significant after the threshold level. Moreover, inflation has a negative and significant impact on export diversification in both regimes.
