Despite the long history of contract farming in Iran, this production system lacks a comprehensive legal framework. The absence of transparent laws, contract registration systems, power imbalance between farmers and companies, and lack of specialized dispute resolution bodies have threatened its development and sustainability.
This research aims to conduct a legal-economic analysis of contract farming in Iran, identifying legal challenges, evaluating economic consequences, and explaining institutional success factors.
The research was conducted with an analytical-descriptive approach using library and documentary methods. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis with dual coding (legal and economic). The study includes domestic and international sources in law, economics, and rural development.
The structure of agricultural contracts in Iran faces three fundamental legal challenges: (1) specialized legal vacuum; (2) lack of transparency and power balance; (3) weak dispute resolution mechanisms. Economically, contract farming can increase income and productivity, but this depends on simultaneous support services (training, quality inputs, and extension). A comparative study with India and Vietnam shows that supportive laws and efficient arbitration systems are key to sustainability; while the lack of such infrastructure in Iran has jeopardized long-term farmer participation. Legal quality as an institutional context reinforces the market mechanism, and legal reforms (mandatory contract registration, clarification of provisions, base price setting, and specialized dispute resolution bodies) increase economic returns far more than merely raising prices.
Developing comprehensive laws, strengthening regulatory institutions, promoting social capital and legal literacy among farmers, and learning from successful global experiences are key strategies for sustainable contract farming development in Iran.
